Before Starting an Exercise Program
Being more physically active is very safe for MOST people. The PAR-Q+ (French Q-AAP+)
questionnaire will help the participant to determine whether it is necessary to seek further advice from a
doctor OR a qualified exercise professional before becoming more physically active.
The following checklist will help to guide the participant in preparation for fitness activities:
- Complete the PAR-Q+ and consult with a physician if necessary
- Establish goals
- Make the commitment to yourself
- Get educated – the more you know, the healthier and safer you will be
- Have the appropriate footwear and apparel for exercise

Nutrition
Firefighting is a physically demanding occupation that may require 6,000 calories (kilocalories) per day. Fire fighters who do not consume enough calories will become fatigued and lose body weight and muscle. Consuming too few calories over the weeks and months of a busy fire season can impair immune function and lead to illness. Fire fighters should check their weight every 2 weeks to monitor their energy balance. The best time to weigh is in the morning before breakfast (but after urination). Energy (calories) comes from carbohydrate, fat, and protein. Having the amount and type of food recommended and following the tips included in Canada's Food Guide will also contribute to overall health and fitness.
